Compare Books lets you put two or three titles next to each other and see word count, estimated reading time, text sections, sentence flow, chapter rhythm, subjects, and page information when available. These numbers are descriptive, not judgments. They help you anticipate the size and shape of a book before you start.
Word count and estimated reading time are the most obvious differences. For example, "Petroleum — Themes and Context" (id 275) is 46,095 words, which translates to about 201 minutes of reading. In contrast, "Modern Machine-Shop Practice, Volumes I and II — Reading Companion" (id 250) is a massive 801,590 words, with an estimated reading time of 3,486 minutes. That is a difference of about 755,000 words, or roughly 3,020 pages at 250 words per page. Clearly, one is a weekend project, the other a months-long endeavor.
Even smaller differences matter. A 46,000-word book versus a 61,000-word book, like "Principles of Mining: Valuation, Organization and Administration — Text and Context" (id 224), is about 15,000 words, or 60 pages. That might be a week of reading at 10 pages a day. Knowing this helps you decide which book fits your available time.
The number of text sections can indicate how the book is structured. "Petroleum" has 6 sections, while "Modern Machine-Shop Practice" has 149 sections. A book with many sections might have shorter chapters, offering more stopping points. For example, if you have limited reading time, a book with 149 sections might allow you to read a complete section in one sitting. Chapter rhythm is relative to this catalog; it is not a quality rating. A 'low' chapter count might mean fewer, longer chapters, while 'high' means more, shorter ones. You can use this to match your reading style. If you prefer to read in small increments, look for books with higher section counts. If you like to settle into a long narrative, lower section counts might be more satisfying.
Sentence flow, measured by average words per sentence, can affect readability. For instance, "Petroleum" has an average of 30.4 words per sentence, which is on the higher side. "Modern Machine-Shop Practice" has 24.5, and "Principles of Mining" has 20.3. A lower number often means more direct sentences, but it is not a measure of difficulty. It might just indicate a more telegraphic style. You can compare these numbers to see which book's prose you might find more comfortable.
